Alexander Gerst’s Blue Dot Here is an amazing visual experience that captures both the relative and the absolute aspect of ‘being’ in Samsara. By placing a camera outside our usual dimensions of space and time, a German astronaut gives us a third-eye- perspective of the Earth. We see its grandeur and also its fragility as a tiny life raft adrift in the vast sea of the cosmos. Notice in the night sequences how the whole planet is illuminated by burning fossil fuels. Electric light bulbs were only invented in the 1880s; now they cover the planet. How long do we have until the oil and coal are gone? How long until the carbon dioxide and methane unleash the next great die-off? When you are trapped in a life raft, you tend to conserve your resources, but humanity seems extraordinarily oblivious to her precarious situation. We need more movies like Alexander Gerst’s Blue Dot time-lapse. We need some true leadership in our governments. We need fewer corporations and more Buddhas. https://youtube/watch?v=lNwWOul4i9Y
