Alexander confirms Westminster commitment to cuts Wed, 12/11/2014 Treasury Chief Secretary Danny Alexander’s admission today that he is committed to an additional “tens of billions of pounds” of further cuts after the next election has increased the pressure on his party to detail where the impact of their cuts will fall – and shows why full control over the economy should be transferred to Scotland. Danny Alexander’s admission today comes in the aftermath of the revelation that the cuts George Osborne is planning after the next election are so severe that they have left even some UK Government ministers ‘aghast’ – and a report in the Financial Times that the level of planned cuts are set to almost double to around £48bn. Commenting, SNP Treasury spokesperson Stewart Hosie said: “Danny Alexander and the Liberal Democrats have been amongst the biggest cheerleaders for Westminster’s austerity agenda – and this admission of tens of billions more cuts to come will do him no favours amongst people in Scotland already fed up with Westminster’s mindless devotion to austerity. “Communities across Scotland are already suffering as a result of the cuts agenda of the UK Government - Danny Alexander needs to come clean and let people know exactly what his new round of cuts would mean for communities and public services across the country. “In recent days we have found out that the level of cuts planned is set to double – leaving even UK Government ministers ‘aghast’. And with Labour under Ed Miliband also signing up to substantial cuts after the next election, it’s clear that the entire Westminster establishment is intent on carrying on with the economic madness of austerity. “Thats exactly why key economic powers should be transferred to Scotland rather than being held by a Westminster establishment obsessed with austerity - allowing us to invest in our public services, create jobs and protect the most vulnerable people in society.”
