Alhamdolillah!!! This is my life and I love every single minute in that torture chamber … WHY??? because when Im standing there in front of the mirror looking at myself, I have no where else to go but within myself. I can walk out of the room but luckily thats not allowed once youre in there. Entering that hot room is like going inside your own self … hating anything or anyone in that room is equivalent to hating something inside of yourself. Enjoying the misery & the suffering in that room is like identifying, acknowledging and recognizing those aspects of yourself that you normally ignore in life. You huff and you puff, you sit down, you lie down, you toss and turn on that mat … Guess WHAT? Youre growing, youre strengthening yourself, your body is learning new ways of being, youre transforming, youre transcending all boundaries of your comfort zone, youre stepping into the unfamiliar, the unknown, the uncertain. Youre a gem in the making, carbon ready to turn into a diamond and storm the world with its value and magnificence. How? By doing what you have never done before, bending your spine backwards from the coccyx to the neck so your lower back, middle back, upper back, total spine is backward bending … the instructor is asking you to look at the floor behind you and youre thinking the only way I could do that would be if I had eyes at the back of my head and tilt my head backwards so I could look at the floor behind me, but you dont have eyes at the back, however you do have a spine which is capable of doing miraculous things only if you allow it, only if you let go of that fear, only if youre willing to push yourself to your edge and beyond. Everything that happens in that room tells you everything about yourself. It has nothing to do with the instructor. I have walked out of, what the majority of my fellow yogis would call, an amazing class and say, that was such a shitty class. Why? Because that class probably got me in touch with a part of me that I did not want to acknowledge and that technically should be the best class I have ever taken because it made me uncomfortable. Then there are times when Ive walked out of a class and felt like that was the best class Ive ever taken but someone or the other would say otherwise. Then there are also times when Ive walked out of a class and thought, wow! I did not expect that from that teacher. Well, guess what? Its all a reflection of you and your inner self. Going in without any expectations and with an open mind is what this yoga teaches us. Before you go in or when you do go in, sit on your mat and just take a minute to close your eyes and have a conversation with your practice like an about-to-be-mother does with the baby in her womb. Tell your practice Im here to learn more about myself and Im open to whatever you bring my way because I will be nothing but grateful to learn something new about myself today, physically, emotionally, spiritually and mentally. Set that intention everyday and say, Im open. Then open your eyes, look at your own eyes in the mirror, smyes (smile with your eyes), concentrate, meditate and begin please Inhale … Appreciate every bead of sweat that drops off your body onto that floor. Be grateful for every single class that you take, even if you were in sivasana during the entire class. Honour your standing series with a humble bow. Before you leave the room put your hands/palms on the floor and touch it meaningfully to express gratitude for letting you practice on it. Be patient with yourself. Be compassionate. Be wise enough to understand that this yoga is there to make you strive for growth, not for perfection. In the end, before you leave, just make it a point to simply say Thank You! to your teacher … it means the world to them to know that the career theyve chosen for the rest of their lives is worth it because of yogis like YOU! Namaste, from my practice to yours. Changezi. P.S This is an excerpt from something that Im writing and will soon be ready to share with you all :) #BYTT2014
