Ali Farka Toure is from Kanau, a village near the river Niger , about 65 km from Timbuktu . He belongs to a noble family of the ethnic Arma 1 , itself a result of the ethnic Songhai . His father was a soldier, he died during the Second World War . His family then moved to Niafunké (located 250 km south-west of Timbuktu ). He does not attend school and spends his days working in the fields.
