All Devouring Night July 10 You who wish this story told Must listen carefully be as bold. And should anyone here feel too afraid Leave now before you are delayed. And do not interrupt or cry: Heroes live but for to die. Still seeds they sow before the end Grow in the soil that others tend. So a noble act may find the stake Where evil does a conscience break. Then and there Mankind is tried- Not a soul condemns the ones who lied. Yet every man knows in his heart The truth just not where or how to start: To remedy the wrongs of those Who in revenge would rain down blows, And crush the life and bring despair To whomsoever gives compassion rare. Well: are you still hearing these words I speak? Though they be true they are cold and bleak. The most dangerous art is the art of hate: That brings the devil to the gate; That works with misery to defeat desire; That subdues the righteous rewards the liar; That orders blackness where once there was light; And that destroys those who challenge rise to fight… That all-devouring night. That all-devouring night. Friends history is bursting with tales of such pain- The line is repeated again again and again.
