All, Dont know who has been following this topic but a few of us have been on the trail of an authentic image of Southampton Medieval castle and LynandBrian Harvey had it all the time! This is what we have been looking for! From this moment onwards there can be no doubt whatsoever about the form of the Medieval castle. It was NOT a shell keep I am sorry to say Bernard Andrews but the more traditional rectangular keep. In the second image you can clearly see what must be some of the earliest images of the BARGATE and ARUNDEL TOWER. The town walls are also clearly visible. When I started my own researches I believed that local historians overplayed the history of Southampton Medieval castle but this image shows the building in all its pomp and glory reinforcing the significant place it was in our nations history. kip NOTE; This is is the image that should dictate future images of the castle. No more guessing. I should be grateful if forum members could share this image so that more people are aware of the role SOUTHAMPTON has played in the past. Also I hope people dont mind me pointing out the similarities with the later neo-gothic folly with which it had no connection. PS ENGLISH HERITAGE TAKE NOTE!
