All Students FROM : Prof LR van Staden Administrator DATE : 24 July 2013 SUBJECT : COMMUNIQUÉ TO STUDENTS ON STAFF STRIKE _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The University community was informed through our memo on 22 July 2013 of the staff strike over salary demands for 2013. It is regrettable that as the second semester has recently commenced, students are affected by the disruption of classes. I wish to emphasise that management is committed to finding solutions to the non-resolution that has arisen from the recent negotiations with both unions. The following issues are contested: 1. Salary increase for 2013: given the current financial state of the University and the fact that we are slowly emerging from a situation of bankruptcy, management’s offer of a 4, 25% increase is the maximum that the University can afford at present. Labour is demanding an increase of 8-10%; 2. Outstanding issues from the 2012 salary negotiations: harmonisation across all campuses of the car subsidy, travel allowance and commuting allowance are not able to be addressed at this point owing to the financial status of the University; 3. Finalisation of leave buy-out: this matter once again is dependent on the availability of financial resources. I appreciate the fact that staff are deserving of an increase in 2013. However, the future financial sustainability of the University will be in jeopardy if an unaffordable increase is granted. I wish to assure students that management is doing everything possible to bring the strike to a swift conclusion. Your patience and understanding is much appreciated. Thank you.
