All area residents, including UW-Sheboygan students, faculty and staff, are invited to the University of Wisconsin-Sheboygan’s fall 2014 University Theatre production of “Yellow Face” by David Henry Hwang. The show will take the stage October 30-November 1 in the UW-Sheboygan Fine Arts Theatre. Brought to Sheboygan by University Theatre Director Dr. Thomas Campbell, the show promises audiences laughter and insightful thought into the controversial topic of racial identity. In Yellow Face, which is the winner of the 2008 Obie Award for Playwriting, the lines between truth and fiction blur in David Henry Hwangs memoir. Asian-American playwright Hwang, who had recently won the Tony Award for M. Butterfly, leads a protest against the casting of Jonathan Pryce as the Eurasian pimp in the original Broadway production of Miss Saigon, calling this practice yellowface. This approach eventually comes back to haunt him when he mistakes a Caucasian actor, Marcus G. Dahlman, for mixed-race, and casts him in the lead Asian role of his own Broadway-bound comedy, Face Value. Hwang tries to conceal his blunder to protect his reputation as an Asian-American role model by passing the actor off as a Siberian Jew. Hwang eventually confronts the ever-changing role that face plays in American life today. Yellow Face will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 30 and Friday, October 31 and at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 1. Tickets are $10 for the general public, $5 for students and senior citizens and free to all UW-Sheboygan students with current ID.
