All instrumental teachers should have a tool box. In that box is duck tape, masking tape and electrical tape - GREAT, but these wonderful items should NOT be used to fix woodwind or brass instruments. In my post on Nov. 5, I said it scares me to hear that a students trumpet with a broken brace was fixed with duck tape. So before I give you the solution lets figure out WHY you shouldnt use this method. Tape leaves a sticky residue when removed. When you remove it from a brass/ww instrument, it can also remove the plating. Also you will need to get a brass instrument into a repair shop to be fixed properly. Repair people will have to use a special non-abrasive solution to remove that sticky substance before the brace can be resoldered. The individual will pay the price for that labor + the cost to resolder.$$$$ Now the easy solution is STRING!!! I keep in my tool box a heavy string (you can buy kite string too). The brace to the lead pipe or from bell flare to tuning slide is usually damaged when dropped. So take the STRING and wrap it around the leadpipe to the crook to hold it in place. This quick solution will help your students get through a performance and not allow other braces to POP off - now dont forget to send it to the shop.
