All life is Sacred. We come into life as sacred beings. When we abuse the Sacredness of life we affect all Creation -White Buffalo Proclamation 2014. Today has been officially declared to be the anniversary of the birth of the white buffalo. White Buffalo Day is a fine example of a widely unknown miracle as it celebrates the legacy and teachings of a 19-generations-old prophecy of The Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota People (collectively known as The Sioux). Mount Lamborn reveals a white limestone feature shaped much like a buffalo. This mountain is the source of our towns water and had the name White Buffalo Mountain according to Ute stories. Settlers renamed the mountain, Lamborn Mountain, in keeping with their Christian beliefs and analogies to the “lamb of God” in the New Testament. So, the towns mountain presides over the valley and is reflected in the stories of two spiritual traditions: the Christian stories and the stories of the People of the Shining Mountains, the Ute. Its no coincidence that we all have chosen to be born, move,and live here at the base of this beautiful mountain. Paonia is a special sacred place full of natural abundance, beauty and possibility. I am grateful to be able to call it home.
