All my life Ive attended or been a member of a church fellowship that sings her hymns a cappella -- without accompaniment. Ive never been clear on why or how that got started. Some of us do so because we just like its simplicity; others because its our tradition; still others because they honestly believe God would rather send them to hell than hear their songs of praise and encouragement with even one note of instrumental enhancement. For half my life, Ive been a member of a fandom of the fifty-year-old television series Doctor Who, and Ive been binge-watching it on Netflix to catch up with the latest series, which was -- pardon the term -- resurrected in 2005. I hadnt watched the episode Gridlock until this morning. Didnt even really like it. But I will have to admit, when the denizens of 51st Century lower NewX5 York eased the frustration of being stuck-in-their-homey-little-identical-hovervans in an eternal traffic jam ... by singing old Christian hymns a cappella -- and the first one I heard was The Old Rugged Cross -- I felt tears welling in my eyes as well. youtube/watch?v=I1oEuWb9CxM
