All of our Oral History collection is being made digital. Heres a gem about leadership and family. In it was a recollection from Admiral Nimitz’s wife. The entire audio is from many people who knew him. Sadly, he died before we could conduct his oral history. Her recollection is this, on December 7, 1941 (Pearl Harbor) Him: “I’m to be the the new Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet.” Her: “Well Darling, you have always wanted command.” Him: “The fleet’s at the bottom of the sea. Nobody must know that here [DC]. …and she replied, “if there is anyone in the world who can save us, you can.” As she describes, they went downstairs and had dinner with their children. He said he would have to have a statement for the press and took out a pad and pencil, wrote a statement and passed it around, asking “does this sound right? “It is a great responsibility and I will do my utmost to meet it.” The family agreed this would be okay. His daughter Catherine put the paper in her pocket, and said, “I am sure this is history, so make another copy.” He did for each of the children. He kept the fourth copy which was delivered to the press two weeks later.
