All of the hard work from various groups around NSW has finally paid off and a Container Deposit Scheme will finally be re-introduced in NSW! Perhaps we will see a decline in trash in Byron Bay as people start realising that they can actually make money from cans and bottles, leading to more people picking up rubbish when they see it and less people throwing these items away. South Australia recycles almost double the amount of cans and bottles than NSW, with an 80% recycling rate. In countries like Germany recycling of bottles and cans is almost 95% due to reverse vending machines, a container deposit scheme and a collective mentality of doing the right thing. Finally we are waking up to the fact that initiatives supporting the environment are good for people and good for the planet! Great work Mike Baird for supporting this initiative despite strong pressure from the beverage industry!
