All over the world, city leaders focus on ECONOMIC development, and on LIVEABILITY. City mayors spend a lot of time figuring out how to create jobs, get new industries into their areas, help works stay skilled, and so on. But in Indian cities, there is no such focus. In our governance system, there is no one (or institution) that focuses on economic vitality of the city/region. We need a Bangalore Economic Development Agency - oddly, enough the acronym seems to suggest that we dont need it - BEDA :-) I have been writing a white paper on this - called BEDA beku to outline what sorts of things are missing in our current focus and how we can plug those gaps. Some other cities are also showing interest in giving themselves a better economic future by looking at this aspect of their development. Mysore and Coimbatore, and more and more Tier 2 cities seem particularly interested in this.
