HOLLYWOOD BLVD – Emma Eberlin, 96, who has lived in Queens Village since 1935, in front of Spencer Avenue Home of 1930’s movie star, Mary Pickford (Daily News - July 14, 2002). Emma Eberlin was a newlywed when she moved into Queens Village in 1935. For the retired elementary school teacher from Brooklyn, the move was an adjustment. “I was really Brooklyn-bred, so coming to Queens was like moving to the country.” She remembers grass was so high I just mowed a little square for a natural playpen to put my baby in.” Eberlin said that on her daily trips to the grocery store on Hillside Ave, the shopkeeper would tell her stories about the Indians who would visit, promoting their medicinal herbs. The Indians would set up their tepees on what is today, the Grand Central Parkway.
