All right, I may be geeking out a little too much here but as a Massage Therapist this is actually a really important concept for me to try and explain in a simple way to my clients. As this article states, muscles work in pairs. Every time you move you are witnessing the effects of the relationships between different muscles groups in your body. In order for one group of muscles to contract ( and make movement happen ) another group has to simultaneously release. Why is this important? You know that chronic tight muscle in your neck? What happens if it just cant relax? This starts a cascading effect throughout your entire body in which the dysfunction in one muscle or group of muscles is inhibiting or not allowing another group of muscle to do their job. So when you come in with low back pain and your Massage Therapist suggest you spend your session addressing your legs....or you have a kink in the back of your neck and they want to also address the front of your shoulders....they just might be onto something (-;
