All right, now. I want your suggestions - In January Ill be teaching (again) a first-year course called Sociology through Film, which is intended to explore sociological ideas using non-documentary films to illustrate (or challenge). Its not a Sociology OF Film class. Some but not all the students have competed the Intro course. Im orienting the course (again) to focus on what sociology can teach us about Social Diversity. That means I focus especially on ideas like Identity, Social Status, Stereotypes, Cultural Norms/Social Control, and Privilege. I like the idea of films that present diverse populations speaking for themselves. To date Ive committed myself to including the following films: Trading Places Made in Dagenheim School Colors Far From Heaven Pleasantville Waitress Paradise Now Rabbit-proof Fence Ive tried others, with more or less success, that I wont list here. Ive found that students are less open to subtitled films or films before 1996 - so that influences but doesnt define my list. What films would you recommend for such a course?
