All sarcasm aside, packaging often determines how the content of said packaging is perceived. The New Jim Crow newjimcrow/ may appear to many as a non-issue but it is real. Talking about race is painfully, awkward and difficult for everyone. Denial or avoidance of a discussion on race will not end racism in America. Being aware of how our society really works requires people to see beyond the mythology and biases of identity politics. Even if you believe that a post-racial America is now in effect, The New Jim Crow is perspective on modern America that will provide insight into why people of color are still struggling to Live the Dream. Now back to my sarcastic attempts to reconcile the absurd dichotomy of being loved by some for who I actually am as a human being and hated by many others on sight for the stereotype theyve been conditioned to believe I am; sweetness and light for everyone (dont worry, Im running out of photos of kittens, butterflies and rainbows anyway).
