All summer long, I had not seen many Bluebirds. Unusual, given my rural location. Bluebirds, once a predominant species in North America, were edged out by the introduction of foreign species, primarily the European Starling, over the last few centuries. Not being the quickest birds around, their practice of landing on the ground to feed makes them vulnerable to predators, as well. Especially when their habitat has become mowed lawns and open fields devoid of ground cover. But, they have been making a comeback. I was very pleased, stumbling out onto the front porch this morning with my first cup of coffee, to spot more than a dozen Bluebirds doing their Bluebird things before heading South ahead of the weather. A little piece of good news for a change.
