All the middle ground interest groups, the civil society organizations, need for their existence the muscle that organized labour; the unions can bring to bear. Where the unions became complacent, stopped promoting people from the ranks, which meant the occasional nut job broke through, but that was a necessary part of he dialectic, but instead the unions were taken over by degrees... literally. First the unions were co-opted, given sweetheart deals, especially in Defense/armaments etc. Then they were bypassed,corralled and pushed off the scene. Without the unions all the other groups are easily knocked over, one by one. There are very few real civil society organizations still existing, just state funded quangos who substitute for them
