All the time while I was working in a cube, Mike Rowe was a hero - TopicsExpress

All the time while I was working in a cube, Mike Rowe was a hero to me. Now that I have my own Dirty Job, I have some time to read his posts... and he is even more of a hero than I originally thought (you know, since he cleaned the bottom of elevator shafts and also harvested night crawler worms). Here he is being amazing. Its Memorial Day weekend, and Im not going to say everyone thinks its about bbq and frothies, since I see from my newsfeed that EVERYONE remembers its about those who died in wars. But there are so many who dont die, but who have to live with the effects of war on their own lives on a very personal and regular level. This year, in addition to the memories of those who have given their lives to this country, Im going to think about those who live on after war -- The people in our country who come back and still are coping with the war. They are veterans, but so many have lost something in many ways more significant than losing life. Most of us go along not knowing what it means to stand up and volunteer to give our lives for something. I sure dont. I gave my financial security for my own independence... what risk is that? No matter what, I still have my life. The real risk is volunteering to lose life and limb, in a very literal way, to fight for our country. Regardless of how you feel about the wars, the people who serve are PEOPLE who have volunteered to do what they think will protect us in our homes, in our lives, in our country. They go halfway around the world, leave family and friends, and sign up for what they already know will probably be the most harrowing, shitty thing they ever have to face in their lives. And they do it. Too many of them die doing it. Too many of them are critically injured. But they do it for us. For ME. And Im very grateful. Thanks for listening to me on my soapbox.
