All these sappy, last-minute appeals to nationalism – Scottish, - TopicsExpress

All these sappy, last-minute appeals to nationalism – Scottish, British, etc – are lost on me. I’ve never considered myself to be any of those things, and it makes me cringe when people talk about the potential psychological impact a Yes or No vote would have on their sense of identity. Can a person’s identity be that insecure? Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if the front pages for a lot of tomorrow’s tabloids were considered so tacky they helped to push a few more undecideds towards a Yes vote. ‘Don’t let the sun set on our 307 years together,’ evoking memories of empire (remember, that ‘empire on which the sun never sets’?); ‘keep Britain truly GREAT,’ evoking the tacky tabloid cultural nationalism of game shows like ‘I Love My Country’... Surely there are better ways to sell the Union than this stomach-turning wail-fest? It’s almost like they’re actively trying to secure a Yes vote... Well, whatever happens, tomorrow belongs to you Scotland! ‘To-morrow, and to-morrow, and to-morrow...’ So keep it civil, keep it sane. youtube/watch?v=lv0jav4lNsk
