All this week well be presenting a summary of the big points covered on Sunday, 8/10, our 2nd Sunday of two describing how a Christian can/should view mental wellness and illness. On that Sunday, we laid out some foundational principles that are both 100% biblical and 100% scientific, proving St. Augustines point 1700 years ago when he said, All truth is Gods truth. Biblical Basic for Mental Wellbeing #1 - You are a whole person - a mysterious, unfathomable blend of distinct facets or parts. You are a body, you are a brain, you are a conscious mind, you are your emotions, and you are spiritual. None of those parts are separable from the others, and in fact all those parts affect each other. Thus, to lead a life that is mentally well, it will take all of you - all of those parts/facets engaged and working together, positively affecting each other. This means your body and physical activity, your behavior, your spiritual life, your emotional reactions and discipline, your recurring thoughts, etc., etc. are all necessary to live mentally well, and they are all necessary to heal mental illness. Any solution to mental illness that is partial, or only focuses on one part of you, is incomplete. A purely physiological view of mental health (take this pill and youll be better) is just as incomplete as the all to common Christian response of Give it to God, pray about it more, read the Bible more, focus on Jesus more, serve other more, and youll be better.
