All weekend Ive been thinking about the statistics of Chicago - did you know that this weekend 2,695,568 did NOT get shot or die. Isnt that incredible that in a city with that number of people irritating each other that the numbers arent higher? Of those 2.7 million I wonder how many got hit by a s/o, how many were children who were left on their own, how many were injured in an accident of some sort, and what the number was of people who lived their lives and were happy or content or even depressed and lonely. It is a tragedy that 30+ people WERE shot and that 4 died. It should never happen. They point out in the news that more people have been killed in Chicago than troops in Afghanistan. But realistically, there are less troops there so the percentage is actually higher. And my son has just returned from his second tour there. Our troops are highly trained to be careful and to defend themselves. You cant say the same of our young people in the city. UNFORTUNATELY THEY ARENT REALLY TRAINED IN ANYTHING. Why is that? Many of their elders never put much importance on any kind of training and never provided any for them. The schools arent trained to train the kids how to live in their neighborhoods and thrive, even when they can keep them in school. The neighborhood people who have succeeded move out as soon as they can and only tell their stories about those days making them sound much more glamorous than they really were. They dont join any of the groups like Big Brother/Big Sister or Fresh Start or Polishing Pebbles to help these young people. The cops are their enemy. The white people who might help them are their enemy. The church people just dont know whats up. Cmon, lets be real. Under these circumstances were lucky it was only 30 shot and 4 dead. Change needs to be made. Its not the young ones who are going to make those changes.
