All you who are thirsty, come to the water! You who have no money, come, receive grain and eat; Come, without paying and without cost, drink wine and milk! —ISAIAH 55:1 We pay special attention to the images of feasts and food in Scripture. “The people of the first century,” write the authors of The Food and Feasts of Jesus, “instinctively understood something about the experience of dining that we seem to have forgotten. Common meals forge community. The act of dining together creates a bond between those at the meal.” And the invitation we receive here in Isaiah creates a community of eternal company as pure gift.
