Allegheny County Courthouse and Jail Complex to Receive Long Overdue TLC Over the next decade, Allegheny County will prioritize restoration projects on the historic courthouse complex, while it seeks funding from the state and the community. Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald commented on the restoration effort, “This is the public’s building. We want to make sure, number one, that it functions for the day-to-day operations of the court system and county government. But also something that people can be proud of that is there building for Allegheny County.” Built between 1884-1888, the Allegheny County Courthouse and Jail complex is the well-known design by architect Henry Hobson Richardson. Richardson’s design is considered among the truly great examples of his individual architectural style - Richardson Romanesque. The courthouse also includes classic Renaissance details, Syrian arches, Byzantine Capitals, late Gothic dormer windows and French Renaissance roofs.
