Allie Duensing, South Elgin High School, addresses the U-46 BOE, 10/20/14: “…First off, I had created a petition that was passed around South Elgin High regarding the grading system. In three days we collected 278 signatures. All day Friday and today students were asking for more petitions so that they could pass them around. I had to tell them no because I didn’t print enough out…Many students I’ve talked to would be fine with last year’s 5 point system. At least we still had a chance to get good grades…I just wanted to say that with this new grading system I’m terrified to take any AP courses. If I can’t get an A in a regular class there’s no way I’m going to get an A in the AP class. It’s sad, I would love to take an AP course to expand my knowledge but I’m thinking about turning my back on the opportunity. I don’t my GPA to go down any lower than it’s going already.” “…My sister had a goal last year of getting a plaque for attaining straight A’s for her two years in middle school. She worked hard to reach that goal. With this new system she is completely changed. Her whole demeanor has taken on a 180 degree turn. She stopped trying to reach a nearly impossible goal…this system is crushing not only my sister but all of us.” Allie and her 278 + peers dont care about peer reviewed journals proving Standards Based Grading works. They live in the real world.youtu.be/yQl3w1_Q21A
