Allowing certain closely held businesses special exemptions on religious grounds, a compromise that Chief Justice John Roberts suggested Tuesday, raises two worrisome outcomes. One is that religious owners would demand exemptions from other medical treatments they say violate their convictions, such as vaccinations, blood transfusions and psychiatric care. The other is that creating an exemption for religious owners would require courts to decide which businesses were sufficiently religious to merit exemptions and which were not. The public would be better served if the justices drew a clear line now and let the plaintiffs, whose sincerity is not in doubt, follow their faith by other means
