Allright Vashon, I gotta set the record straight here...For the past several months, 9 out of 10 people I see on the island say the same thing to me--Did you move back? Are you back?. Some say I heard on the radio that you moved away-are you back now?. I NEVER LEFT. I NEVER MOVED AWAY. I WAS HERE ALL ALONG. The only reason I feel the need to point this out in a public forum like this is because this persistent RUMOR that I am gone is directly affecting the contents of my refrigerator. You see, as the owner of a small contracting business, I depend directly on word of mouth advertising and referrals. I was quite successful here for over a decade, and 95% of my business was based on referrals. Advertising in the Beachcomber or the Loop never really worked for me. I always ask my clients And how did hear about me? and it was always Well so and so said that you do really nice work. I tried spending tons of dollars on conventional advertising and I never got a single job from that. If you live on Vashon, you have seen this really nice work, whether its in the Hardware Store Restaurant, the Ober Park VPD building, 20/20 Eyecare, LaPlaya restaurant, and a ton of other more private places. Decks, Kitchens, Bathrooms, Garages, Entire houses... Well now, my phone has hardly rang at all since November. This is not right. If I had done bad work, or screwed someone over, word would travel like wildfire and I would be forced to tuck my tail between my legs and go elsewhere. Instead, when my wife left the island (and me) and moved to Olympia with my children (one of whom was actually born ON VASHON), word spread like wildfire that I was gone. Moved away. Vanished. Then the light-speed rumor mill we have here informed everyone who likes to gossip about people (you know who you are) that I was no longer doing business here. Even the radio reinforced this rumor. And rumor was all it was. I did do my damndest to save my marriage by commuting to Vashon every day for several months from OLYMPIA, but I was here working, just about each and every day that there was work to be done. SO PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, spend a second or two, and if you contributed to that rumor that I was gone, please go out of your way to tell someone No, TAB TABSCOTT NEVER LEFT. I would not feel entitled to take up this much bandwith, but this rumor is everywhere, I hear it tens of times per day. I AM HERE. I FIX THINGS. I BUILD THINGS, and I AM GOOD AT IT. Please make my phone ring once again like it used to. Feel free to post here and say Damn Right, Tab fixed my toilet and it works Great! Also feel free to post here if you feel the need and say Oh god HES BACK-He Totally Screwed Me Over and did LOUSY WORK. I guarantee that the former is the case and you wont see ANY of the latter. You cannot stay in business on a small island like this with the healthy rumor mill we have unless you are true blue, top notch, impeccably honest, and you do what you say you are going to do when you say you are going to do it for what you said you would do it for...dangling participles and all.
