Almost 10 years ago Berlin-based Anderhalten Architekten made a proposal for a light transformation of Palast der Republik (weltkulturpalast). Their project would have cost 60 Million EUR and offered 106.000 sqm of usable surface. By contrast, the reconstructed Schloss will cost more than 600 Million EUR and offer as little as 41.000 sqm usable surface - thats less than half the space for 10 times as much money with a construction cost of a whopping 15.000 EUR/sqm. Its the economy, stupid ... Anderhaltens transformation project would also have taken advantage of all the capital already invested in the Palast, such as the existing steel and concrete construction worth 110 Million EUR. Construction time for their tuned Palast building was estimated to be 2-3 years. In other words, by 2010 Berlin could have had a unique public cultural building four times the size of Palais de Tokyo for 1/10th of the cost of the Schloss, and could have used the remaining 9/10 of the latter’s budget for the operation and programming of this new institution – 540 EUR Million EUR. It’s not Berlin that is poor, but it’s politicians.
