Almost Harvest time! Well its still a couple of months off but Bill and Maureen shot a quick taster video of some of the Tosai currently growing a the Purdin facility. The incredible facilities at Purdin Koi Farm were the inspiration for the article in Nishikigoi Yearbook - Concrete & Clay which looks at the relative benefits of growing Koi in mud ponds vs concrete ponds. For us at least the availability of extensive protected concrete growing ponds has proved a game changer. Mud ponds have always been a potentially dangerous environment for young Koi, but in Louisiana where there are an additional set of voracious predators in the form of snapping turtles, snakes, aligators and 6 herons etc this combined with unpredicatable climatic conditions especially in the summer, the protected concrete lagoons enable us to retain all the bemefits of the spring water and high summer temperatures but at the same time significantly reduce the aformentioned risk factors. The Purdin Koi class of 2014 promises to be the most exciting ever, hope you enjoy this small preview and we will bring you much more soon.
