Almost done with Richard Dawkins book, The God Delusion. It is - TopicsExpress

Almost done with Richard Dawkins book, The God Delusion. It is wiser and more fascinating than many, if not most, of the books Ive read recently. I keep wanting to quote extensively from the book and post here as a way of promoting interest in the book and provoking discussion about belief in god. But I recognize how central belief is for some of my friends and want to apologize in advance for any offense that might be given here. But I cant stay completely quiet on the topic. the essential evidence for the existence of purgatory [as outlined in the Catholic Encyclopedia] is this. If the dead simply went to heaven or hell on the basis of their sins while on earth, there would be no point in praying for them. For why pray for the dead, if there be no belief in the power of prayer to afford solace to those who as yet are excluded from the sight of god. And we do pray for the dead, dont we? Therefore purgatory must exist, otherwise our prayers would be pointless! Q.E.D. This seriously is an example of what passes for reasoning in the theological mind, writes Dawkins on page 403.
