Almost every year since 1903, Major League Baseball has held what it bills as a World Series. Originally, there was some truth to this name: the game was not played to a great extent outside North America, despite attempts by Albert G. Spaulding and others to promote its diffusion throughout the world. But by the 1930s, and certainly since the end of World War II, the game HAS been played--at a high skill level--in Central and South America, Japan, and recently in Australia, China, and South Korea. So is this truly a World Series? Maybe it is. The Boston Red Sox just won the World Series with a Japanese closer, an Aruban 3rd baseman, a Hawaiian right fielder, a Native American center fielder, and a Dominican DH, among others
