Almost four decades ago, I almost got lynched ina sarv khap called in Kanjhawla village in Delhi. The issue was marge scale violence against dalits -- or harijans, as they were then called -- and the caste groups had not liked my reporting which took up the cause of the marginalised. It was Raja Mahender Singh himself who saved me and my photographer the late TR Chopra from the mob. This was long before Tikait came on to the scene. i think I know a little of what khap panchayats can be all about.
