Alofi, Niue, 17 th July 2014: Government of Niue is pleased to announce, the first 20 containers of asbestos from Niue shipped to New Zealand, has reached its final destination. Facilitating agents both in Niue and New Zealand has confirmed the shipment arrived at Auckland last week after a short delay due to bad weather. There were no issues to the handling of cargo and processing at the Ports of Auckland and delivery was without incident. Mr John Wichman who is contracted by the Government of Niue to assist facilitate the disposal of the asbestos material, has congratulated the Government in taking the progressive steps towards the responsible disposal of asbestos at a licensed facility. “Niue now has a strong template to dispose the remainder of the asbestos as required” says Mr Wichman. The confirmation has also been acknowledged by Matson Shipping who has given credit to the contractor for the preparations leading up to the carriage of the sensitive cargo to New Zealand. The next shipment of 20 more containers to New Zealand is scheduled for the September boat. Government of Niue anticipates that the project to remove all asbestos from the island will be completed by 2015.
