Along with my concern for Cass, Ive been watching Shelby for some - TopicsExpress

Along with my concern for Cass, Ive been watching Shelby for some weeks with great sadness. Im pretty sure that coffin bone has rotated in his left fore. Tough little guy keeps moving when he has to, but is clearly in pain. Ive got him some pain meds on board, with a little improvement, and found some additional food sources to help regain the weight which the pain had cost him, but in the last couple of days, hes gone completely blind in his blue eye. Sigh. Realistically, another ancient one who has been on borrowed time for a long time. A few days ago, as he trucked past headed for the arena for breakfast with Pistol by his side, for no reason at all Keller charged him. As he tried to turn to avoid the attack, he fell hard on his side. Keller practically ran over him. Pistol, of course, just jumped up and down and ran away. Anyway, when the other horses start to show that kind of pointless aggression, it can be a sign that the subject of their aggression is failing, and they try to drive it away from the herd (as something that attracts predators). Yes, I did give Keller a couple of real hard whacks. I know theyre horses, but this is one aspect of herd life I DO NOT like. And a final note of anticipatory sadness is, found a molar in Buckys stall on Sunday. Weve been so glad to pull him thru the past couple of winters. Like Shelby, hes well into his 30s. Once they start losing teeth ..... Between these two boys, and dear Cass, were looking at some loss in the near future, I believe. Ill try to post pics of them in the next weeks ....so we dont forget.....
