Along with the peace and quiet of rural summers, the hammock seems to have vanished. Long ago ,it was the symbol of rustic ease,comfort and modest luxury. Here one could lie on a drowsy afternoon, practically wallowing in indolence. Distant noises of bees, birds and farm activity had a lulling effect . Sleep came near. Anyone who indulged in this boneless, swaying relaxation was considered to be living the good life.
