Alpha House Update - Oct 9th, 2013 Sometimes movement is about geography and not history. In our case it is a bit of both as we prepare to move home. On October 15th, 2013 the Alpha House shelter at the old Science Centre will be closing and we will be moving to our renovated from the flood Alpha House Main building at 203- 15 Ave SE. Our shelter will be up and running and welcoming clients at 2:00pm that very day. As we leave the old Science Centre behind we are thankful for the support we received there from the Province of Alberta: Human Services, the City of Calgary, Calgary Police Services, Calgary Emergency Services, Calgary Transit Services the Downtown West Association and many others who extended a welcoming hand to us and to a vulnerable population of people made even more so by a disaster that will continue to impact our city for years to come. Together we created safety and caring for our clients and the community; always our ongoing mandate. Come Tuesday Oct 15, 2013 our phone system will be working and the shelter team can be reached at Alpha House’s main number 403 234 7388. We hope the shelter fax number will be connected as well at 403 705 0123. Nicole Bealing our Shelter Coordinator and her team are doing all that needs to be done to be ready and messages can also be left for her at cell 403 404 7388. Given the circumstances she might not get to her emails till Oct 16, 2013. Detox remains closed but its reopening date will be announced soon. We are grateful to Karen Steele for taking on the team lead role for this transition. Karen is available through the Alpha Main number 403 234 7388 on Oct 15, 2013 as well. Staff will continue to assess client withdrawal and detox needs through the Alpha Main shelter. Moving forward admin people will be at CUPS for a while longer. We are so thankful to the spirit and caring we see daily at CUPS. Our web site alphahousecalgary has email links as well. It would be remiss not to thanks the Alberta Infrastructure and Edon Management for their ongoing work. Recently we had our 2012- 2013 AGM. We thanked two volunteers that evening Luz Stella Norena and Louise Gallagher for their volunteer work and fundraising efforts for Alpha House. We also heard from staff member Russell Wood talk to us about client engagement. All three reminded us in one way or another how important it is to believe in the work we do and to also believe and respect the work that the client does for themselves. In the end it is their lives we witness and their leadership and self-determination we are asked to support. Given this to all of you a Happy Thanksgiving.
