Already? Already? One week into the college football season and the Heisman Watch has already started? Of course the top five players are QBs. Ive never heard of Texas A&Ms Kenny Hill, but his 500 yards passing wouldve apparently have landed the Heisman had it been awarded today... Georgias RB,Todd Gurley, who ESPN said a week ago,is the best RB in the nation. Yesterday he scored 4 TDs,including a 100 yd kick-off return, but he wasnt even mentioned in the Heisman discussion this morning.???? I just get tired of QBs dominating the discussion. Especially with 80% of schools running wide open offenses, which routinely HAVE to score 50,60,and even 70 points just to squeak by their opponents. These offenses bloat the numbers of a decent to good QB. Ill always be more impressed with a RB that runs for 150 yards with 100 of those yards coming after first contact, than Ill ever be with 600 yards passing, with 8 plays going for 50+ yards because the QB threw it to a WR that was 10 yards behind the secondary. Sure, these QBs are talented. No doubt...,but theyre largely dependent on their O-line,and hugely dependent on their WRs. A great RB,on the other hand needs one block, for a split second. To me,he doesnt have to go off tackle, untouched for 80 yards for it to be a great run. If he gains 12 yards while breaking 4 tackles, makes two more defenders miss, and picks up a first down,..its a great individual play in my book...and thats what the Heisman award is supposed to recognize,....the best player.
