Already mentioned that Birmingham is the city from where most people are visiting English in Eastbourne (EinE). Only natural, seeing as I’ve worked at the University there for a spell every year for years and I am in touch with a number of colleagues and ex-colleagues, students and ex-students there. Third and fourth on the list are Cordoba and Granada. Not surprising either, as I’ve just been to those two cities to spread the news about EinE, and with regard to Cordoba I should thank Jen Dobson for her support. But second on the list IS a big surprise: Irbil (or Erbil or Arbil), capital of the autonomous region of Kurdistan in Iraq. This must all come from the two Kurdish students I taught at Birmingham last year, Shakhawan M Lashkri and Mawlood Sheney, because they are my only link to the region. Incidentally, just one of those visitors from Irbil did it in Kurdish, the rest used the international lingua franca English. A special greeting, then, to all those visitors to EinE from KURDISTAN.
