Already the wheels are starting to come off the federal plan for the killer freeway between Perth Airport and the sea port. There are people living along High Street in Fremante who are being tortured by the noise from the existing truck traffic every day, in their own homes. The Department of Transport, rather than getting the freight onto rail and getting the trucks off the raods, uses the desperation ofthose householders to try to build a constituency of people who would endorse any plan, no matter what it was, as long as it came with a promis to cut the noise. However, even those people must be able to see that this whole project is going nowhere fast. By turning the issue of genuinely upgrading High Street to make a safer roadup into this truck industry wet dream, the government is delaying anything from being done indefinitely - to everybodys detriment. The real soution is for the governent to spend its infrastructure money on sustainable projects, like upgrding the exisitng rail infrastructure from Fremantle Port to the Airport.
