Alright, Ill do it. Ill be the one to defend CC today. Since everyone else is posting about how evil he was (including those that I know are moral relativists). This is the epitome of Monday morning quarterbacking (exacerbated by about 500 years). Viewing the actions (which we all benefit from) of our ancestors through our modern enligtened glasses is both naive and arrogant. Unless youre the guy whos been outside the wire as a stranger in a strange land surrounded by people of a different culture that want to skin you alive, I dont want to hear about what Columbus should or shouldnt have done. You think progress comes cheaply? There is always struggle. All civilization comes at the expense of human life. Alexander, Charlemagne, Peter the Great, the Civil War, Attaturk, Operation Enduring Freedom; the list is endless. Human history is largely a tale of one group imposing their ways on another. I am not making any moral qualification of progress, merely showing that all cultures are guilty of the same sins common to humanity. You think the natives of the Americas were any different? NO! They were just as brutal, just as terrible as any civilized power. Would Montezuma have behaved any differently if the situation were reversed and he was the first to land on Spanish shores? Of course not. This whole viewing of the Americas pre-Columbus as a land filled with peaceful blue monkeys from Avatar who did no wrong is extremely naive. The same people decrying CCs use of force against the savages in the New World keep mum about our use of force to modernize the barbaric Taliban terrorists today. We all want to feel the benefits of civilization but condemn the men that brought it to us or who maintain it on a daily basis. I am not saying I would slaughter innocents as Columbus is accused of. What I am saying is that I know as we condemn the Roman foot-soldier today for his actions in the past, I, too, will be condemned in the future as a tool of the evil American republic of the past. Okay, rant over.
