Alright Rachel, heres mine: 14 Things: 1. When I first started singing, I hated it! 2. When I first was exposed to opera, I hated it! Now I can’t get enough. 3. I can trace my desire to become a musician to one cassette tape that I found in my dad’s collection - “By Request”, mostly of music by John Williams, with him conducting the Boston Pops. I still get the same thrill from that album that I did when I first heard it. Movie soundtracks became my great passion, and my sister Anna & I would see who could name the composer within the first few seconds of the opening of a movie. I’m still pretty good at it, though a lot of soundtracks don’t have much to say anymore, so it’s harder to recognize composers. 4. I firmly believe in the power of pretend, and I have used it my entire life when faced with unknown/scary situations. I pretend I know what I’m doing until I actually do. Of course now I worry that one day I’m going to leave my house and a bunch of people are going to be sitting there waiting to point at me and say “ha! we figured you out! you’re a big fat phony!” … 5. I am extremely shy, and have a hard time in new social situations. I’m not good at meeting new people (unless I pretend to be) and prefer to be very private. I love staying in; home is my favorite place in the entire world. Along those same lines, I absolutely hate airplanes, and traveling in general I don’t find particularly rewarding. 6. I hate begin categorized as a specific kind of singer. I feel it’s the job of every singer in this country to have flexibility, and my career has spanned many genres and style, all of which I love. 7. If I could have a choice of whatever career I wanted, I would be a professional soccer manager/coach. I LOVE soccer. I also love football (American football that is), but soccer borders on an obsession (that word will likely appear many times throughout this list). 8. I LOVE to read, but feel constantly overwhelmed by the sheer number of books out there. So I taught myself to speed-read (by reading a book about it) and though I know people who are faster than me I can devour three or four books at a time on a weekly basis. I also love non-fiction, informational, method, history, philosophy, psychology, etc. But since I obsess about not just reading books but also being able to remember everything I read, I constantly imagine myself sharing the information I read with others. 9. Most of my day is spent wondering what I’m forgetting or neglecting to do. 10. I obsess over the safety/health of my children to unhealthy levels. For this reason I think Finding Nemo may be my favorite movie ever - I know exactly how Marlin feels. Parenting sure is sacrificing one’s own needs/feelings for those of your children. 11. I simultaneously love and hate composition. If there is one thing I want to spend more time doing it’s writing music, but it can be sheer torture. Creativity is hard. 12. My favorite visual expression is photography, though when I was little I desperately wanted to learn how to draw. I remember getting up late one night and going to my desk, determined to draw the most amazing looking fighter jet ever, but after several broken pencils, torn up pieces of paper, and many tears, I gave up and decided I would never learn to draw. 13. I still thoroughly enjoy video games, and feel like there is real artistic untapped potential for artists and musicians in their design and creation (beyond violence and mind-numbing repetition). As a means for story-telling and providing exciting environments for creation they are remarkable. 14. Sometimes I ache for Germany, particularly Heidelberg. It makes me sad to realize the only place I think of as “where I’m from” or “home” is now missing all the people who made it that way. For this reason I am eternally grateful that my home is portable, and the woman who makes it home is mine forever. “like” and I’ll give you a number. I’ve really enjoyed this trend, getting to know my amazing friends.
