Alright, alright, alright. Heres the thing about INTERSTELLAR, - TopicsExpress

Alright, alright, alright. Heres the thing about INTERSTELLAR, folks. Yes, its a bit of a brain buster. Yes, it makes some wonky dramatic decisions late during its third act. But at least it TRIES to challenge you, TRIES to give you a different cinematic experience than youre used to getting in a theater. Look at the four other films topping the box office last weekend - HUNGER GAMES, PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR, BIG HERO 6 and HORRIBLE BOSSES 2 - and youll find a bunch of homogenized, sequel-ized entertainment relying exclusively on nostalgia to give you a good time. As good as MOCKINGJAY is, its the third part of a series (split into two pieces! so that Lionsgate can make back twice its investment!) you no doubt already know the ending to. As good as BIG HERO 6 can be, its based on a Marvel comic, and a repeat of the same basic formula (mystical doohickey everyone desires but doesnt understand! beloved supporting character who dies heroically but then really doesnt! end credits stinger hinting at future sequels!) theyve been churning out for years now. And yet we keep falling for it! Over and over again! INTERSTELLAR (and Christopher Nolan, for that matter) may not be everyones cup of tea, but at least it aims for something higher than all the familiar thrills. Isnt that what we want out of our movies? Isnt that what we strive for, hunger for, seek above all other things? Or are we destined for decades of formula films and franchises, driven entirely by studios and box office tallies, setting our minds on autopilot and checking all creativity at the door? Hello? Is anybody listening to me? Ah, screw it. Im going to go watch the STAR WARS: FORCE AWAKENS teaser for the 1,138th time...
