Alright everyone! I am not sure what led up to this or where it is going, but this is something I wrote sometime last year and Im sharing it with you. :D Untitled WIP *Subject to change/edit “Stevens.” Rocky said after clearing his throat. I looked up expectantly, our eyes met briefly and then he looked away. Surely everyone knew by now about the incident. I wasn’t even sure how I was able to bring it on and everyone was suddenly terrified of me. “You’re needed in the commons.” He said as he unlatched the padlock on my cell door. I nodded and stood, smoothing my cotton t-shirt. “Do you know who needs me?” I asked as I stepped out of the cell and followed Rocky down the dimly lit hallway. He glanced back quickly, not making eye contact. “Superior Jones,” He replied, maintaining his clipped tone. My heart began racing and I clenched my fists tightly at my sides. “Did he say what this is about?” I wondered. I was grasping at straws to get any info from Rocky, though I was sure he wouldn’t tell me anything. Rocky continued on down the hall, not breathing a single word. As we rounded the corner to the elevators, I began to feel butterflies in my stomach and my palms sweat. It wasn’t my intention to harm Nathan. I had no idea how I had harmed him. What was it that I heard Sarah say? I had “Fried his brain like an egg”. I sure hoped he wouldn’t be seriously injured or worse. I couldn’t even think it. Rocky pushed the button for the main floor as we stepped into the elevator. I felt like I was in a small metal box and my heart hammered in my ears. I took a few deep breaths, staring at an old stain on the floor. The doors opened and I was greeted by a new guard. I didn’t recognize him and he wore no badge like the others. He gave a curt nod to Rocky who stepped out next to me. “Superior Jones and Officer Kent are waiting for you.” He said. I felt his eyes roaming over my body and it made me self-conscious. I noticed Rocky tense beside me and I turned my head to look at him. His eyes were narrowed at the guard. “I’ll take it from here.” The new guard said. “I was told to never let her out of my sight.” Rocky quickly interjected. The stranger shrugged. “Come along then.” He said and led us toward the common area. When we reached the center of the room, I looked around to see if anyone else would be here. It was only the superior and his second in command. You could have heard a pin drop in the usually bustling area. It was an eerie feeling as if the whole entire place was holding its breath, watching from afar at my execution. I had a gut-wrenching fear suddenly and wondered what Superior Jones would do to me for my uncontrolled outburst. Maybe if I just told him the truth and explained that Nathan had been taunting me, all would be forgiven. Somehow I doubted that was likely, but without hope I was sure to break down. I continued to follow the unnamed guard toward one of the round, metal tables in the corner of the room. I looked at the two men waiting for me there. If it was possible, my heart rate spiked even more. Superior Jones was a tall man with thick, dark hair and equally dark eyes. He had a square, smooth jaw and he sat relaxed. He gazed at me with a quiet confidence and the air around him was undoubtedly powerful and all knowing. To say I felt intimidated was an understatement. Officer Kent sat next to him looking bored. His eyes were wavering and he appeared to be wishing he was somewhere else. “Thank you Oliver.” Superior Jones said to the guard. “Superior.” Oliver replied with a slight bow of his head. The superior looked at me and then Rocky. “You have orders to watch this one?” He asked him speculatively. “I do,” Rocky replied. “Good…And you Miss Stevens.” The superior shifted his gaze to me. I met his gaze and willed my knees to stop trembling. “Tell me girl, how old are you?” He asked. “Nineteen.” I replied meekly. He nodded at Officer Kent, who stepped away from the table and toward me. “Don’t be alarmed dear girl.” Superior Jones said. “Officer Kent is just going to look you over.” “There’s nothing on her.” Rocky spoke up. I watched his hand twitch as if to reach for me and then he stopped, clenching his fist at his side. “What’s your name boy?” Superior Jones asked. “Rocky, sir.” He replied. “Rocky, your orders are to watch her. Stay quiet like a good guard. Do not belittle me.” The superior reprimanded. Rocky’s head bent down and he pressed his lips into a tight line. Officer Kent wrapped his long fingers around my right wrist and slowly raised my arm. He examined me, trailing one finger down to my hand and back up. He repeated this on my left side as well. I stood perfectly still until he kneeled in front of me and began raising my shirt. My hand flew to my stomach, stopping his movement. I gasped as Officer Kent stood, smirking at me. “I don’t know what I did or how I did it, but I promise I have nothing on me.” I said in a wavering voice. Superior Jones nodded and the officer step away. “Please, sit.” He motioned me with a wave at the chair across from him. I did as he said. The superior watched me momentarily before speaking again. “Why are you here…What’s your first name?” “Emerald,” I told him. “Emerald, who sent you to Cherry Hill?” He asked. “My aunt.” “And did she say why she sent you here?” He wondered. “I got into some trouble back home. I was…attacked.” I didn’t want to speak of what happened unless my life depended on it. Especially with this man who scared me and the other two who kept eyeing me in an uncomfortable way. The superior nodded. “Your ability is quite interesting. How long have you had it?” I shook my head. “I don’t know. I’ve only used it twice and both were by accident.” I replied honestly. “Hmm…Mentally incapacitating is quite unique. There must be a trigger.” He concluded. I shrugged. “Maybe…” I said. Superior Jones smiled and leaned closer to me with his elbow resting on the table in front of him. “What could that trigger be?” He asked. “I don’t know.” “Ah, but you must. You see Emerald, someone with your power is a grave danger to others. If you want any chance of leaving Cherry Hill, we have to find out how to manage this power.” All I wanted was to get out of here. What worried me was IF I was a threat, what would happen when I was in the real world again. I didn’t want to hurt anyone. Perhaps somebody in here could teach me how to control it. I thought about both situations when my ability came in to play. When those two men approached me at the park I was terrified. Fear had taken over. Was it fear that caused me to react? I thought about what happened with Nathan. He had said I was unwelcome and unwanted. He called me useless and that made me angry, not afraid. The strangers at the park had touched me and groped me. Maybe I was more angry than afraid then too. “Anger…” I said quietly. The superior cocked his brow at me and then looked at Officer Kent. He whispered something to the officer who nodded and then left. “It seems possible that losing control could cause your power to become present. That makes you quite a threat.” “I honestly didn’t mean for anyone to get hurt.” I said. “Please, I don’t know how to control it, but I’ll learn.” I began to panic. Would they keep me in solitude? “Calm down Miss Stevens.” Superior Jones said in a stern tone. “You aren’t in trouble…Yet.” I looked at him and tried to control my breathing. “I think we need to test your theory and then figure out what we can do to manage it.” I let out a staggered breath. “How will you test me?” I wondered. Just then, Officer Kent walked back into the common area with a long nylon rope in his hands. He wore an evil smirk and his eyes sparkled. I heard Rocky let out a low growl and felt him move closer to me. I didn’t know what was going to happen, but it surely couldn’t be good. The guard, Oliver, stepped back to allow Officer Kent to approach me. He reached for my trembling hands and pulled them behind my back. I looked up at Rocky who met my gaze. He didn’t shy away from looking at me this time. It seemed like he was searching for something in my eyes. Almost like he was looking passed me. If he was trying to distract me, it was working. I stayed focused on him as the officer bound my hands behind me. He grasped my arm above my elbow and lifted me out of the seat. My heart pounded as I turned to look at him. “Emerald, we are now going to test your ability and see if we can trigger it.” Superior Jones said. “What are you going to do?” I asked again, trying to stay calm. “You said that you were attacked and I’ve heard that Nathan provoked you. Fear or anger is the cause and now we will see which one.” He explained. “Surely this won’t work. I-” Rocky began. The superior narrowed his eyes at him. “What do you do guard?” He asked. Rocky was silent. I looked at him to see what could be causing his apprehension. His face looked vulnerable for a brief moment and then his tough façade was back. “I’m a perceiver.” He said quietly. “A perceiver of what my boy” The superior asked impatiently. I held my breath waiting for Rocky’s response. I had thought that this typically silent man who had been guarding me the last week was simple. Judging by his build and height, I had assumed he had the ability of strength. Rocky glanced at me briefly and then to the superior. “The future, sir.” He replied. An audible gasp escaped my lips. He could tell the future? He had been looking out for me for a week and he could see the future? I was in shock. “Well, well, well.” Superior Jones smiled at him. “It seems you will be able to tell us if our little experiment will work.” Copyright @ 2013 M.K. Oien
