Alright, everyone who actually reads what I post... This is a sneak peek at a project I have just started on. You can thank David Nd Sarah Lunghofer for the title. She commented on my parenting technique and it made me laugh: Charging the Bull: How to raise a well adjusted Aspie First and foremost let me begin with this: Autism is not a death sentence, no matter where someone might fall on the spectrum! That’s right folks, it is not a life threatening disease destined to ruin your family, break apart your marriage and drain your bank accounts. Sure it can be darned inconvenient from time to time but with perseverance many on the spectrum can have an amazing life. Secondly, let me point out that Autism is a spectrum disorder. You should hold off on hitting the panic button until you see what form autism is going to take in your life. That might not be evident at first as even a higher functioning person can and will struggle early on. With the right support, a lot of love and the occasional kick in the pants there is a good chance that diagnosis won’t be as bad as you think! Third and I can’t stress this point enough: If you have had the diagnosis for a while and you weren’t prepared for it at the time there is a good chance that we will have some work to do retraining both you and your child. That’s ok, and it is no reflection on you as a parent or a person. Kids don’t come with instruction manuals. I know this for 100% certainty because both my sons were delivered as C- Section and I had the doctor thoroughly check the package they came in for instructions and a customer service phone number. Neither item was evident, although the manufacturer did kiss a stamp onto the bottom of each of their feet as she said “You have passed inspection.” If past history is any indication, you are going to hate me by the end of this book. I have been working as a life coach since 2001, and it has been a recognizable and expected pattern to have like turn into loathed and then back into respect over the course of working with me. It is perfectly fine if you don’t end up wanting to be my close personal friend when you finish this book, so long as you take away something valuable from what you have read. This book is not just for parents of the newly diagnosed. It will be for the spouses, extended family, friends, and teachers as well. It is my hope that if I write this in the manner that it needs to be that it will be of benefit to anyone who wants to understand and improve the lives of anyone on the spectrum who happens to be in their sphere of influence.
