Alright folks, Here we are facing our first blast of really cold weather this year. The last time this happened we were getting one emergency call every fifteen minutes. Calls not just involving little leaks, but about flooding homes with ceilings falling in and basements filling up. Please follow these quick tips below to avoid seeing us a 3am. 1. Make sure all of your foundation vents are closed. Most are automatic, but make sure. 2. Remove the garden hose from the spigot. We get more calls for this than any other. 3.Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage. If you are handy, buy some pipe wrap from the hardware store and cover all exposed pipes. Use electrical tape to keep it in place. If you know of any other exposed pipes, take care of them while you are at it. 4. When it turns frigid, open all of your cabinet doors under the plumbing fixtures. This Normally only applies to plumbing on outside walls, but better safe than sorry. 5. Keep your house temperature up. Dont lower it while you are at work or away. 6. Most important! Leave your water running during the extreme cold. There are some that say you shouldnt because you will lower the overall pressure for the metro area. A ruptured pipe will be much worse. Leave both the hot and cold dripping quickly during the worst of this cold. I leave mine on in a light stream. 7. In case you do have an emergency, know beforehand how to shut off the water to your house, then please call us at 615-793-1000. Stay warm and safe!
