Alright friends.... Ive finally been nominated for this Ice Bucket challenge thing. So now I get to tell you all why I will not be dumping a bucket of ice water on my head. My great-aunt Thelma, who was very dear to our whole family, died of ALS when I was in grade school. I remember her very clearly before she had ALS and I also remember visiting while she was in the midst of battling ALS. She had lost the ability to speak, she could barely stand up on her own, and my grandma was living with them to help her husband care for her - including bathing her and blending her food for her because she could not chew anymore. Her brain was still totally fine, but she was literally dying trapped in a cage of her own failing body. It is one of the most painful ways to die I can possibly imagine, and I dont wish it on anyone. So, instead of dumping ice on my head, I will be donating what I can, as well as encouraging people to actually learn something about ALS, and maybe donate $5 or $10 dollars to helping to find a cure. Before everyone explodes about my annoyance at these videos, yes - I am aware that they have somehow actually raised awareness and money. And yes, I am aware that awareness is half the battle. But to my mind, the videos dont address the disease, they dont direct people to any organization where you can donate, or any educational information. So... I think there have to be better ways to go about doing this. So, first, this article. Next, I will find a place to actually donate said money. And now I will step off my soap-box.
