Alright, good news is that Im not driving the van to Jersey this morning. Ive used this time to approximate the real-world dimensions of a 40k table by comparing modern weapon ranges to those found on the tabletop. Specifically the near universal 24/12 of mainstay rifles and rapid fire range. I could be more thorough, but I think the following suffices: M16 assault rifles have a reported effective area target range of 800m and 500m versus point targets. M4 Carbines have effective ranges of 600m/500m. If I use the effective area range of the M16 and compare it to 24 I get approximately 33.3m per inch. Similarly, assuming a range of 600m for M4 is proportionate to 18 on the tabletop. I feel that equating 24/18/12 with 800m/600m/400m is pretty reasonable. With this in mind, that means a 72x48 battlefield is 2400m x 1600m. 2.4km x 1.6km seems like an appropriate size for a battlefield.
