Alrighty, so for Northern Thunder we all have a kit list or we will be given a kitlist. Im just going to go over the kitlist that i have and clarify some of the things that are included and make some recommendations just so that we are all on the same page and so that you know what is expected for you to bring and not to bring. This isnt just us being arbitrary and simply making rules, this list is so that everyone has all the equipment to have a fun and comfortable weekend. If you arent able to get your hands on anything in this kitlist due to finances or your parents arent able to find the time to go shopping, let one of us (me) know so that we can set you up. All the items that have been circled, underlined or have a mark beside them are important and are what will be talked out. Red: complete change of clothing bring what you are wearing PLUS two of everything. That means you will have 3 shirts. 3 pants, 3 things of undergarments and so on. This way you can change your clothes if you feel like it and if any accidents happen (water, mud, rips...) I have underlined no jeans preferred please ignore the preferred part. ABSOLUTELY no jeans, even if they are camo coloured. Just because they arent typical blue colour doesnt mean they arent jeans. Jeans are made of denim and so if you bring anything made of denim you will NOT get to wear them. If you dont have anything else you will NOT attend the FTX. Wear sweat pants. That is probably the best option. Also, polyester and nylon cloths are a terrible idea. We will have fires and if sparks get on you (which they will) your pants/jackets will be covered with holes. Cotton sweat pants are the best. Grean: heavy, warm sweater or vest In my opinion, vests arent that great for weather protection but if you want to wear then than go right ahead. Just make sure to bring an actual sweater. Bring a jacket as well. The cadet issued one is perfect, its water resistant, the outer layer peals off and its fashionable If you can bring a hoody, that would be nice for 2 reasons. One the hood will be nice when itms a little bit chilly if you would rather not wear a toque (bring a toque anyways) and if it starts raining you can just flip up the hood and you will be nice and dry. Blue: hat/toque Bring a baseball hat to keep the sun out off your head and out of your eyes. Bring a toque so that you will stay warm. Both of these are required. They are very important. Do not forget these. Fuchsia: Waterproof and warm winter boots Obviously its not winter out so im making a change to this. Bring a pair of gum boots (preferably insulated) so that your feet will stay dry when it rains. Extra dry footwear you already have your gumboots soooo.... Wear hiking boots or hiking shoes. These are designed for, guess what...hiking and camping and just plain ole forest stuff. I personally would scotch guard them so that theyre water resistant but if not, bring more that the recommended pairs of socks because they will more than likely get wet Orange: Flashlight and extra batteries Bring two flashlights. One to keep on you and the other to just go in your bag. Trust me, you will understand why when you have to wake up at 2:45 in the morning to go to the bathroom Obviously, this goes without saying, bring extra batteries that fit your flashlight. Yellow: Personal toilet articles the most important thing would be a toothbrush and toothpaste. Please use them, there is nothing more disgusting than the stench of 2 day old cheese omelette emitting from your mouth. Also, bring deodorant, not the spray cans because those smell nasty and will be confiscated immediately, but bring a nice smelling stick of old spice or well, anything but adidas because that stuff is rank. This goes for boys and girls. Yes, girls get BO too. Teal: plastic whistle the plastic whistle should be something like a fox 40 whistle. Fox 40s are, in this F/Sgts opinion, the best out there. Glow in the dark ones are nice because theyre cool and you can find them easily in the dark because that is when youre most likely to get lost. DONT get a whistle with the little ball in them. They will get clogged and stop working when you most need them to work. Pink circle (non required equipment): Pocket knife under 6 Your knife does not need to be a machete. We are not going on an expedition through the amazon jungle nor are we zombie slaying. The only thing i can see you using a knife for if cutting rope and opening your MRE bags. Keep it small and dont bring your grandfathers knife that was given to him as a wedding gift because it may just get stolen. Knifes are a pretty big target and we are not the only people going. Camera Please do not bring your expensive Cannon Rebel T5i DSLR because it is possible it will get stolen, smashed, soaked or whatever. If you reaaaalllllyyyy want to go ahead but your expensive equipment is not our responsibility. Just bring a cheep point and shoot camera or maybe even a disposable camera. Axe/hatchet We (the squadron) will bring axes but i would recommend bringing your own hatchet/axe because that way yours not always running around and tracking down the axes from other syndicates, but you dont have to bring an axe or hatchet. Compass A nice compass that you can spin the little dial and that has a string and a line on it would be nice if you want to bring your own because we will have a class on using compasses and maps but we will have a pretty big supply of nice compasses so you dont really need a compass. Water canteen Water bottles are very important. We will not give you water bottles. We will have water that you can fill your bottles with but its your responsibility to bring a water bottle, in my opinion, this should not be optional. It should be MANDATORY. Everything on this list, unless specified or you personally talk to an officer or a senior is mandatory to attend the FTX. All the little recommendations I have made are from the knowledge that i have built up from many FTXs as well as my own experience in the wilderness. There is one final thing when it comes to stolen kit. If the stolen item was on you or secured in your bag when it was taken, than it will be considered stolen and we will do a camp wide search for you. IF IT WAS LEFT OUT IN THE OPEN AND IT GOES MISSING, IT IS NOT CONSIDERED STOLEN. It is considered missing. Do not leave your equipment lying around. Either keep it in your bag or on you at all times.
